Introducing the Counsellor

Cathy Lees

Hello, I'm Cathy Lees and I'd like to tell you a bit about myself here.

I understand that real life can sometimes be complex and very distressing, so I am always sensitive and empathic. I know how hard it can be to achieve peace of mind.

The main reason I became a counsellor was because one day (I can’t remember exactly when) I made a simple decision - I wanted to work therapeutically and authentically with people using talking therapy.

This all went back to the late 1970s. In 1979 I had unexpectedly witnessed enduring personal distress, and then I saw how it could be permanently relieved by strong emotional support. This had been a big change for me because originally I was interested in science and had been working as a medical laboratory technician specialising in bacteriology.  Eventually in 1994 I graduated from The Open University with an honours degree in psychology.

I began my counselling career by working therapeutically with young vulnerable people in Brighton. This was a challenging job, but I also loved it and I continue to do so today, because it enables me to have meaningful and worthwhile relationships, even if we only meet once.

I’ve now had a private online counselling/psychotherapy practice for 10 years, and I'm  currently writing a book. I have an Advanced Certificate in Online Counselling with Online Training for Counsellors Ltd, and I am a member of The Association for Counselling and Therapy Online.
